What is Double Marker Test

During pregnancy there are normally two pairs of XX and XY chromosomes in female and male fetuses.

This trysomy is of two types the first one in which a extra duplicate of chromosome 21 . And the other type is trisomy 18 and 13 in which chromosome 13 and chromosome 18 are developed in addition with the present chromosomes .

Women who get these type of trisomy abnormalility will have a higher level , or a lower level of hCG and PAPP-A . But this is not only the thing which produce result .

For proper outcome NT Scan is also done which is a ultrasound test and used for the examination of baby’s neck tissue .

This test also tells about whether the unborn baby is at risk for any mental disorder and whether your baby is at risk of down syndrome .


At what time Double Marker Test is done

There is not a fixed or specific time at which Double marker or Triple Marker Tests are done . But you doctor will recommend it to you take it around 12 to 14 weeks of pregnancy . The timing is very less around 2-3 weeks so do not avoid doing it especially if you have family background of certain health conditions . People normally avoids this test or delay which causes a delay in catching problems which your baby might have .

Why to do this test or screening

This is mainly done when you have family background which has certain health related condition . Another thing that is considered is that if your age is above 35 years . You might be more prone to certain chromosomal issues . Although this test is not mandatory for all . This test will tell you whether you have a risk of trisomy of not and this might not be able to detect abnormalities of baby.

Normal range of result

25700-288000 mIU/ml is the average or normal value of hCG in pregnant women . And the normal value of PAPP – A is 1 for the Double Marker Test . These ranges are considered ok for all age group women .


There is precautions needed for this test . However your doctor might be interested in knowing about your prior medications . No preparation is needed as it a normal blood and NT scan .
